Objects In The Rearview Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear

In recent weeks, some realities about power structures have come to light: a presidential candidate in the United States, whose beliefs involve racism and incite violence, is democratically elected by his party and has a chance of winning the election; Through a plebiscite, England separates from the European Union; terrorist attacks have spread panic in different cities around the world; The United States government has brought to his knees what was the second richest man in Panama; several Afro-descendant citizens have been mercilessly murdered by the police; Homophobia, religious fanaticism and the presence of the Church within the state have been very present in decision-making in our country, especially in the government of our current president. These and other equally alarming facts are daily news, so much so that (it seems) they have stopped affecting us. It is time to stand firm against these structures, which pretend to protect our freedom, and take action.

En las últimas semanas, algunas realidades sobre las estructuras de poder han salido a relucir: un candidato presidencial en los Estados Unidos, cuyas creencias involucran el racismo e incita a la violencia, es electo democráticamente por su partido y tiene posibilidades de ganar las elecciones; mediante un plebiscito, Inglaterra se separa de la Unión Europea; atentados terroristas han sembrado el pánico en distintas ciudades del mundo; el gobierno de los Estado Unidos ha puesto de rodillas al que era el segundo hombre más rico de Panamá; varios ciudadanos afrodescendientes han sido asesinados despiadádamente por la policía; la homofobia, el fanatismo religioso y la presencia de la Iglesia dentro del estado, se han sentido muy presentes en la toma de decisiones en nuestro país, especialmente en el gobierno de nuestro actual presidente. Estos y otros hechos igual de alarmantes son noticia diaria, ya tanto que (pareciera) han dejado de afectarnos. Es tiempo de pararnos firmes en contra de estas estructuras, que fingen proteger nuestra libertad y tomar acción.
