In 2009, the New Museum in New York reflected on the complexities of the millennial generation, marked by its unique experiences and values in the exhibition "Younger Than Jesus." Over a decade later, Generation Z has emerged as the new voice of youth, bringing with it its own peculiarities that challenge the established conventions of its predecessors. In the last five years, and as a fundamental part of the Panamanian art scene, the "Voces en Acción" workshops, led by Donna Conlon and Jonathan Harker with the support of the Casa Santa Ana Foundation, have played a crucial role. These workshops have contributed to shaping a new generation of artists who, with the recent endorsement of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC Panama), have been formalizing and acquiring increasingly sophisticated tools for their existence. In this context of generational change, "The Present is Yet to Be Written" highlights the vibrant and diverse work of a new generation of artists based in Panama.

Although not all artists in this exhibition are part of Generation Z, their works are born within a still very young artistic ecosystem. From the crossroads of the local scene, these new creators face the constant tension between the quest for their own voice and the unavoidable demands of the current world. Inspired by their most profound experiences, these artists reflect the richness of their journeys through various forms, exploring a wide range of media. In our research for this exhibition, we have discovered a persistent duality, where the decision to sacrifice the production of their works to meet their most basic needs, and vice versa, becomes a balancing act, thus defining their creative experience.

"The Present is Yet to Be Written" invites the viewer to explore the intersections of authenticity and necessity, where artists immerse themselves in the duality of deciding when to yield and when to resist. In doing so, they offer a unique vision of how this new generation confronts current challenges, revealing the complexity and intrinsic beauty of the constant pursuit of their own voice in a world that demands their attention.




En 2009, el New Museum de Nueva York reflexionaba sobre las complejidades de la generación millennial, marcada por sus experiencias
y valores únicos en su exhibición "Younger Than Jesus". Más de una década después, la Generación Z ha emergido como la nueva voz de la juventud, llevando consigo sus propias particularidades que desafían las convenciones establecidas por sus predecesores. En el último quinquenio, y como parte fundamental de la escena artística panameña, los talleres "Voces en Acción" dirigidos por Donna Conlon y Jonathan Harker, con el apoyo de la Fundación Casa Santa Ana, han desempeñado un papel crucial. Estos talleres han contribuido a formar una nueva generación de artistas que, con el reciente respaldo del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC Panamá), ha ido formalizándose y adquiriendo cada vez más herramientas para su existencia. En este contexto de cambio generacional, “El Presente está por Escribirse" destaca el vibrante y diverso trabajo de una nueva generación de artistas residentes en Panamá.

Aunque no todos los artistas de esta exhibición forman parte de la generación Z, sus obras nacen dentro de un ecosistema todavía muy joven. Desde la encrucijada de la escena local, estos nuevos creadores enfrentan la constante tensión entre la búsqueda de una voz propia y las ineludibles demandas del mundo actual. Inspirados por sus vivencias más profundas, estos artistas reflejan la riqueza de sus experiencias a través de diversas formas, explorando una amplia gama de medios. En nuestra investigación para esta exposición, hemos descubierto una dualidad persistente, donde la decisión de sacrificar la producción de sus obras en favor de satisfacer sus necesidades más básicas, y viceversa, se convierte en un acto de equilibrio, definiendo así su experiencia creativa.

“El Presente está por Escribirse" invita al espectador a explorar las intersecciones de la autenticidad y la necesidad, donde los artistas
se sumergen en la dualidad de decidir cuándo ceder y cuándo resistir. Al hacerlo, ofrecen una visión única de cómo esta nueva generación se enfrenta a los desafíos actuales, revelando la complejidad y la belleza intrínseca de su búsqueda constante de una voz propia en un mundo que exige su atención.
