During the last ten years, Abraham Cruzvillegas (Mexico City, 1968) has concentrated his practice on analyzing and using the ingenious, random and precarious construction method that is frequently used in the peripheral areas of the large cities of Latin America, called “ self-construction”. This concept has provided the artist with a flexible line of artistic, social and historical maneuvers through which he spreads his ideas. For him, the pieces are a metaphor of identity in which a constructive hope is reflected: In my work, the transformation of information, materials and objects also composes the unfinished construction of my own identity as an approach to reality through facts.

For “Autoconfusion”, Cruzvillegas tells us about his experience in Panama, through his tool in the recognition of this terrain with so many layers, and so much emotional, economic, affective, political, social and historical charge. In the end, it has ended up having more questions than conclusions and has come to generate a structure based solely on doubts. That structure has perhaps become disproportionate in its scale to the not only geographical dimension of the issue in question, but also its ontological brevity: the here and now.

Durante los últimos diez años, Abraham Cruzvillegas (ciudad de México, 1968) ha concentrado su práctica, en analizar y utilizar el ingenioso, azaroso y precario método de construcción que frecuentemente se emplea en las áreas periféricas de las grandes ciudades de Latinoamérica, denominado “autoconstrucción”. Este concepto ha dotado al artista de una línea flexible de maniobras artísticas, sociales e históricas a través de las cuales esparce sus ideas. Para él las piezas son una metáfora de la identidad en las que se refleja una esperanza constructiva: En mi obra, la transformación de información, materiales y objetos compone también la inacabada construcción de mi propia identidad como una aproximación a la realidad a través de hechos.

Para “Autoconfusión”, Cruzvillegas nos cuenta sobre su experiencia en Panamá, a través de su herramienta en el reconocimiento de este terreno con tantas capas, y tanta carga emocional, económica, afectiva, política, social e histórica. Al final, ha acabado teniendo más preguntas que conclusiones y ha llegado a generar una estructura fincada solamente en dudas . Esa estructura tal vez se ha desproporcionado en su escala con la dimensión no solamente geográfica del asunto en cuestión, sino de su brevedad ontológica : el aquí y el ahora.
